Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and non-surgical
procedure that sprays a stream of fine crystals directly onto the
skin. The top layer of skin is "sandblasted" by aluminum
oxide crystals, vitamin C crystals and other types of mild abrasives.
Microdermabrasion removes only the very top layers of damaged skin,
leaving behind smooth skin and a healthy glow. Microdermabrasion
may improve the appearance of your complexion, but it may not help
major scarring.
The Procedure
A hand held device is used to blasts the stream
of crystals onto the skin. As this is being done, a small vacuum
removes the crystals along with the upper layer of skin. The doctor
can change the pressure to control the amount of penetration, or
concentrate on a specific area to remove the most damaged skin.
You may feel a slight tingling, but the procedure is not considered
painful and requires no anesthesia. Microdermabrasion takes only
20 to 30 minutes and you’re able to return to work. For the
best results, between 5-9 treatments are needed every seven to 10
days.
The Recovery
Your skin may feel hot and appear a little pink
for the first day. Some redness is expected after a treatment, however
this is not likely to persist more than a few hours. The sensation
of having a mild windburn or sunburn will also pass after a few
hours. Applying a high quality moisturizer to re-hydrate the skin
will help. Avoid direct sun exposure for 7 days after a treatment.
The Best Candidates
For Microdermabrasion
The best candidates for microdermabrasion are individuals
with sun-damaged skin, age spots, superficial pigmentation, fine
lines and wrinkles, oily pores, blackheads and whiteheads, and acne
scars. Microdermabrasion is not recommended for those who have active
keloids, undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, severe
acne or unstable diabetes.
The Risks
It is unusual to develop any complications from
microbermabrasion. However, there is a small risk of hyper-pigmentation,
perforation, bleeding, and infection. All risks should be discussed
with your doctor.
Background
Microdermabrasion is effective in reducing fine
lines, "crow’s feet," age spots and acne scars.
It stimulates the production of skin cells and collagen. It has
proven to be a very popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure; see
current American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics.
Technique
The hand piece emits crystals onto the surface
of the skin, resulting in a gentle abrasion or "polishing"
process. Each treatment takes from 30 minutes to an hour. The number
of treatments recommended for maximal results can range between
5 and 12, spaced from 2 to 3 weeks apart. Maintenance of results
requires periodic repeat treatments after the initial regimen is
completed. Microdermabrasion may be combined with a light chemical
peel to increase the effect.
