As we age our buttock begins to droop, change
shape and accumulate deposits of fat that don’t always respond
to diet and exercise. A buttock Lift is a procedure to tighten the
upper thigh and buttock skin that has lost elasticity. The procedure
improves the firmness of skin and underlying tissues. For those
with tight, firm skin, liposuction may be a better choice. The goal
of a buttock lift is a more beautiful, balanced and proportioned
contour to the buttocks that allows you to feel more confident and
comfortable.
The Surgery
This type of surgery is typically performed as an outpatient in
an office based surgical center, an ambulatory surgical center or
in a hospital. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia
and takes between 2-3 hours. During a traditional buttock lift,
an incision will be made across the upper buttock and extend to
the sides, possibly the front. Excess skin and underlying fat are
removed from the buttock area and the remaining skin and tissue
are lifted to achieve a tighter, smoother effect. However, if the
excess skin is limited to the lower buttock area, an incision can
be made in the groin area and under the buttocks. The skin is tightened,
redraped and the excess skin is removed. Sutures are used to close
the incision.
The Recovery
The patient is placed in a compression garment at the end of surgery
to reduce swelling and assist in the natural shrinking and tightening
of the skin. Small amounts of oozing and bleeding are very common.
Bruising and swelling usually subside within a month, strenuous
activities are usually possible in 6 weeks and almost all symptoms
are gone in 4-6 months.
The Best Candidates
For Buttock Lift
The best candidates for a buttock lift are men or women who are
in relatively good shape but are bothered by moderate to large fat
deposits and loose skin that won't respond to diet or exercise.
If your skin area is saggy, has an orange peel, flabby and/or dimpled
appearance and you are self-conscious about your lower body appearance
you may be a good candidate for a buttock lift. Patients who intend
to lose a lot of weight should postpone the surgery.
The Risks
Bad scarring is perhaps the biggest problem with a buttock lift.
Typically the buttock lift heals with wide scars since the wound
closure is placed under tension. Other risks include bleeding, infection,
change in skin sensation and problems healing. Be sure to discuss
all risks associated with this surgery with your plastic surgeon. |
